It’s being described as a “Party 150 Years in the Making” for a book “150 Years in the Making.”

On Thursday, Oct. 6, The Independent, in conjunction with the Marshall-Lyon County Library, will be hosting the official unveiling of “The Sesquicentennial: Cultivating 150 Years of History in Marshall and Lyon County.”

The unveiling of the 336-page book commemorating Marshall’s 150th anniversary will take place at 6 p.m. at the Marshall-Lyon County Library in the community room.

Following the book’s official unveiling, individuals who worked on it, including its editor and Independent Publisher, Gregory Orear, will present 10 select readings. Other readers include Jennifer Andries, director of the Lyon County Historical Society and author of the book’s introduction; Jan Louwagie, the former director of the historical society and researcher for the book; Jim Tate, former Independent editor and research; Jaen Weilage, researcher and proofreader; Ryan Strampe, photo editor, and Cindy Votruba, researcher and proofreader.

Mayor Bob Byrnes and former Independent Editors Dana Yost and Per Peterson are also scheduled to read a selection.

In between the 10 readings, Deutz Auctions will auction off copies 1-10 of the limited first edition, with all of the proceeds benefitting The Lyon County Historical Society.

“We are printing 2,000 copies of the book for sale, and they will be individually numbered,” Orear explained. “By auctioning off the first 10 official copies, I hope we see a great response supporting one a tremendous community asset, the Lyon County Historical Society.”

In addition to Andries writing the introduction, the Historical Society also provided a lot of the photos included in the book and access to newspaper articles.

After the introduction, which chronicles the area and its inhabitants including Native Americans up to the settlers who organized a county in 1870, the remainder of the book dedicates two pages to the top stories of each year. A team of researchers poured through thousands of Marshall newspapers to select those stories, which are reproduced on each page with historical photos in a style similar to newspapers of that era.

The book includes a textured leather cover with a hand-placed photograph of two steam engines entering the Chicago Northwestern depot.

“It’s going to be a beautiful book that will not only look great on a coffee table, but with more than 1,200 individual stories and photos, full of great content as well,” Orear said.

A limited number of books will be available for sale at the event and anyone who pre-ordered one can pick them up at that time as well, a day before they are first available at The Independent office.

While expected to last up to two hours, Orear said the event’s format will allow for people to come and go.

“This will be pretty informal and if you just want to stay a little while and pick up a book and go home, that’s fine,” Orear said. “It’s going to be a relaxed, fun time and I think everyone is really going to enjoy some of the readings we have selected.”

Studio1 will also be on hand to record the event, which will be broadcasted on the public television channel a few days later, while also available on their youtube channel.
