Clemson University officials announced Friday they will auction off a huge piece of furniture that is also the last of a kind piece of history.

For more than 75 years, a majestic red oak tree called the “Clemson Oak” stood tall at “Death Valley” Memorial Stadium.

It witnessed a long list of milestones, including the Tigers taking 24 conference titles, 24 bowls and one of the school’s three football national championships.

The tree was removed in 2015 because it was blocking the view of the scoreboard, and some thought the move was the end of an era. Watch the video of its story here.

But a master woodworking craftsman out of Greensboro, North Carolina, has given the sentry oak new life.

Curtis Martin, of Martin Custom Woodworking, of Martin Custom Woodworking, used the wood to handcraft an iconic, one-of-a-kind, 17-foot boardroom table that the university will now offer to the highest bidder.

“To be the last tree of a 100-year-old oak in the stadium, I think that would have a lot of meaning," Martin said. "Especially with a powerhouse football program that they have here. I just think the two would be, somebody would be lucky to have this in their possession.”

Martin said it took two years to dry the wood before he could begin the transformation.

The table is crafted from the best “center-cut” timber, and bleeds vivid Clemson orange epoxy through its natural splits, officials said.

The table features walnut butterflies and sits on a cherry base with walnut and rosewood accents.

A photo plaque that documents both the tree’s history and Clemson’s football legacy is part of the package.

The auction begins Monday at 8 a.m., with bids being taken at www.clemsonoaktable.com.
