Saddleback Mountain is entering a new era with a familiar face. The Maine ski resort announced this week that Jim Quimby is now serving as General Manager. Before working at Saddleback, he was a part of the U.S. Air Force for 20 years. He began working at the resort in 1997 as a ski patroller and has since worked as the mountain manager, in multiple leadership positions in the operations department, and most recently as the Senior Vice President of Operations. He helped lead the construction of efforts of the Rangeley Express Quad and Cupsuctic T-Bar. Both of Jim’s parents worked at Saddleback, as his dad helped install the Rangeley Double chairlift, and his mom worked in the food and beverage department. Jim’s immediate goals will include the resort’s various offseason projects, adding employee housing, increasing skier visits, and helping lead projects that are part of Saddleback’s comprehensive master development plan.

He replaces Andy Sheppard, who was extremely successful in his efforts and implementation of the changes needed for Saddleback to reopen in the middle of the pandemic. Andy Sheppard stepped down in June due to health reasons but remains with Saddleback to help with fundraising, public relations, completing community development initiatives, and collaborating with their governmental partners.

(June 22, 2022) Rangeley, ME –Saddleback Maine Ski Resort / Arctaris Impact Investors, LLC announced Tuesday that Jimmy Quimby, Senior Vice President of Mountain Operations at Saddleback Mountain, has been promoted to General Manager.  

After serving for more than 20 years in the United States Air Force, Quimby’s career at Saddleback began in 1997 as a member of the volunteer ski patrol.  His role expanded in 2003 when he began managing the resort’s ski patrol and safety departments.  In 2006, Quimby shifted into the role of mountain manager before assuming several leadership positions within the mountain operations department.  Quimby’s most recent role as Senior Vice President of Operations, which he has held since early 2021, saw him focusing his efforts on the installation of the Rangeley Express Quad – the resort’s first high-speed chairlift – the Cupsuptic T-bar, and reopening the ski area after a 5-year closure.     

“Jimmy’s leadership role reflects his operational experience at Saddleback as well as his long, family tradition in the Saddleback community,” said Jonathan Tower, Managing Partner of Arctaris Impact Investors, the mountain’s owner.   “Jimmy has made such a positive imprint on Saddleback, just like his father and his grandfather did before.  It’s a perfect example of why Saddleback is not just another mountain,” added Tower.

Quimby, a lifelong resident of Rangeley, played a pivotal role in Saddleback’s rebirth and reopening, working closely with Arctaris and the development team after a 5-year shutdown from 2015 to 2020.  Working at Saddleback has been a family tradition for Jimmy and the Quimby family.  Quimby’s father, Richard “Doc” Quimby, worked for the mountain from the 1960s – 1980s, installing the prior “Rangeley Double” chair.  Quimby’s mother, Judy, worked in the Saddleback’s food & beverage department in the 1970s.      

Quimby’s immediate focus is to continue working closely with the Saddleback team to improve the resort’s snowmaking capacity, add employee housing, and increase skier visits, while also helping to drive the resort’s long-term master development plan.   “Ultimately, my primary focus and responsibility are to the staff and community.  Saddleback is more than a business,” said Quimby. “Saddleback is our life and dream.  The guests and our community are our family.”

Located in the beautiful High Peaks and Lakes district of western Maine, Saddleback Mountain was founded in 1960  and has grown its reputation for exceptional snow, some of the best skiing terrain in the East, and friendly, laid-back culture. At 4,120 feet of elevation and 2,000 feet of vertical, Saddleback is Maine’s third-largest mountain and the largest independently owned ski resort in the East. Its base lodge elevation of 2,460’ is the highest in the East.
