Milan as a city has numerous identities; from being a fashion capital to a design mecca, the city exists across different layers. For the design fraternity, it is nearly impossible to separate the city of Milan and Salone del Mobile.Milano. In doing so it is imperative to acknowledge that Salone del Mobile is no longer simply a fair, but rather a gathering of remarkable creative minds from across the globe.
This is, however, temporary. One week every year, within the same geographical location of Milan, another dynamic city emerges, the design city. One that is deeply rooted in the idea of projecting what comes next. It would be easy to look at Salone as a confluence of objects, designed and manufactured for a monetary purpose. But we need to acknowledge the potential, the magnitude and the volume of objects created, specifically for Salone. Commercial, retail, cultural and even public spaces are repurposed and transformed into an arena for Milan Design Week. From 5vie, Brera Design Week, Fuorisalone, to Isola Design Festival, Zona Tortona and Durini, every part of Milan embodies a new spirit, a spirit that STIR intends to capture as media partners with each of these districts. While the city remains in a physical stasis, its function and program change. In many ways, the very urban fabric of Milan is altered to present a slightly different version of itself. And this changes every year. Within this temporary city are the markings of a paradigm shift and shifting ideologies, each one manifesting in different ways.
In 2021, though on a slightly smaller scale, the Supersalone celebrated perseverance, resilience, and innovation. This year a major element of Mario Cuccinella's large scale installation Design with Nature postulates that of the city as a mine, one which can be quarried for resources, supplies and ideas. The temporary city instigated by Salone del Mobile.Milano is as potent a resource that will eventually disperse. STIR hopes to document the 2022 temporal existence of Milan Design Week through its coverage over STIRworld and STIRpad.

An educator, curator and architect, she has a Master’s degree in History and Critical Thinking from the Architectural Association, a Bachelor's in Architecture, and a Diploma in Indian Aesthetics. Devanshi has a certificate in Curatorial Studies and co-curated an exhibition at A plus A Gallery, Venice, in 2019. She has been teaching at institutes in Mumbai since 2018.
