Today, higher education institutions are more responsible than ever to actively participate in activities that promote the economic development of the community, while providing students with skills-based opportunities.

Recognizing this responsibility and taking action is the top priority of UNM Anderson School of Management, so we created the Office of Corporate and Community Involvement. Through our efforts to attract local and regional employers and communities, we seek to enrich learners at all levels and create development opportunities for the communities we serve.

Anderson serves the university and the community in many ways, most importantly linking the resources of New Mexico’s flagship business school to our local economy. We provide local companies with opportunities to recruit interns, and collaborate with local companies, entrepreneurs, and faculty to promote classroom projects. In addition, we provide learning opportunities for community members who want to re-master their skills or upgrade their skills in order to prepare themselves for career change or growth.

It is estimated that in the next 10 years, 50% of workers will find that their skills are insufficient. In response to the growing trend of skills-based training and micro-certifications related to specific industries, Anderson has established several new programs to educate those who traditionally have not been addressed in the higher education field. Companies can use the following four opportunities to improve the skills of existing employees and expand their employee base through student assistance.

Access to professional education: The market for these services will grow to $10 billion in 2020, and Anderson is committed to providing these services to our local market and beyond. We have developed a set of valuable and fascinating executive and professional education courses to meet these needs, including micro-certificates in digital marketing, business analysis, entrepreneurship, and human resource management.

Participate in customized training: Anderson also provides customized leadership training solutions for any company that wants to create specialized courses for its employees. Customized training can be tailored to the specific needs of our community companies and non-profit partners, providing valuable and highly personalized options for employee leadership training.

Connect your business with interns and micro-interns: In addition to supporting our community businesses through training and recruitment opportunities, Anderson’s mission is to connect them with the talented students we aspire to deal with local businesses.

We strive to provide them with opportunities to interact with the business community, and we have created an internship program that benefits our students and the local economy. Internships promoted by Anderson provide employers with the opportunity to hire students for a semester or academic year, giving them a realistic job preview so they can assess whether their skills and aspirations are suitable for the people the organization seeks.

We recognize that some companies cannot promise to hire interns, but they may still need short-term help. We can connect these companies with students who want to complete micro-internships: single student projects that last from 5 to 40 hours or lecturer-led classroom projects.

Obtaining business development support: Anderson has achieved significant success in business development. Now under the umbrella of Anderson, the UNM Innovation Academy has helped form nearly 150 income-generating student companies in the past five years. These companies range from dorm e-commerce companies to biotech start-ups, and have raised more than $2 million from outside investors.

Similarly, the Small Business Academy provides support from our student body for small and emerging businesses. Community members can work with the Small Business Association to solve their pressing problems, consult projects, or expand proposals. Recognizing the impact of small businesses on our community is the cornerstone of our commitment to the community, and these opportunities provide our students with a wealth of opportunities to apply their classroom learning.

New Mexicans serving New Mexico companies are critical to the success of our sharing economy. Anderson hopes to be a channel for students and alumni to participate in the local economy, regardless of their needs. As our economy recovers and eventually grows, we are happy to provide these new programs to connect students, alumni and local businesses with each other.
