The experimental standing chair is an alternative table and chair that integrates inclined footrests and cushioned backrests to provide primary spinal support.

Working from home has turned all of us into amateur interior designers. Whether we are transforming a bedroom into a hybrid office or renovating an existing home office, we all know how to work best at this time. When it comes to tables and chairs, the right chair will make a difference. As a result of spending a lot of time sitting down at work, Budapest industrial designer Ariel Levay designed an experimental standing chair that can dynamically adjust its posture throughout the day.

Ariel Levay's experimental standing chair won the A'Design Bronze Award for its innovative simplicity. When describing the inspiration behind its chair design, Levay described: “When we spend most of our working time in our seats, we hear a lot about the harmful effects of sedentary work on the spine. But for a long time Sitting can cause obesity, diabetes and cardiovascular disease."

When designing a standing chair, Levay hopes to give the siters the opportunity to change their standing posture throughout the working day to maintain healthy spinal alignment and posture. Similar to the shape of the back hyperextension exercise equipment, the experimental chair features a main backrest and a cushion. When working at the desk, the nanny can lean back and recline there.

The standing chair includes a slanted footrest that allows the seated person to lean back comfortably while working. Then, just below the main support cushion of the chair, there is a mid-height footrest, where the user can support the feet while sitting on the chair, placing the bottom completely on the backrest. Levay designed an experimental standing chair to reduce the burden on the spine when we sit down and provide a comfortable alternative to standing in front of a high table.

In his words, Levay said: "The furniture has an ethereal but rigid structure. I want it to remain static and strong to keep the furniture [natural]. This chair is composed of geometric elements, so I gave [it] matte black Finishes for a more serious and elegant appearance."
